Is 40 Hz sound stimulation proven to work?

By Johann Dumelie · Last updated: 2026-09-27

No — 40 Hz (gamma-frequency) stimulation is an active area of research, not a proven intervention. Some early studies, mostly using light flicker and some combining light with sound, show promising signals for memory and neural synchrony; results haven't been consistently replicated, and most of this research is still early-stage.

FMB references 40 Hz research on its Research page as part of the evidence base its approach draws on, but does not currently ship any light-flicker sessions and makes no claim that gamma stimulation “works” for a specific outcome. When light-based sessions launch, this page updates with what's shipped versus what's still being studied.
